In my studio I use classical oil painting techniques to create contemporary oil paintings. My painting style is figurative/realist. I use models and set them against a variation of backgrounds, some of them abstract. These enable me to indulge in my love of the human form, often in combination with landscapes, seascapes, flowers or pure color. Some of my paintings are inspired daily observations, others by classical mythology. I am a self-taught painter. I studied chemistry, obtained a PhD and worked in innovation management. During a sabbatical I took sculpture lessons and started drawing again. And that changed everything. Through drawing, painting and sculpting from life models, I developed my skills and my knowledge of human anatomy. After trying several media, I chose oil paints for their beautiful, luminous colors.
Johannes Vermeer for contemplative moods, Robert Mapplethorpe for beautiful nudes, Peter Doig for vibrant colors
