15.8x11.8 in ~ Painting, Oil
An oval painting (tondo) of a skull. The skull is facing the viewer and wears an eye patch over the left eye socket. The eye patch displays a winking eye. The skull is painted floating against a geometric background in black and off-white. To study the anatomy of the human head, I bought an anatomical model of a human skull. It was very instructive to know the general structure that lies beneath a face. So I have been looking at his skull a lot and from all angles. Over time I have come to love it’s beautiful, sculptural form and that is the main reason I decided to paint it. At the same time it has a certain grinning cheekiness that made me adorn it with the eye patch. I used myself as the model for winking eye on the eye patch.
